Spider-man actors

Now, we talk about Spider-man actors, and just one Spider-man actor. Before Tom Holland, it was always a comparison between Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield. But now we have three, who all appear in Spider-man: No Way Home (2021), which we of course reviewed. We felt it was time to look at what each actor has brought to the role. We’ll look at strengths and weaknesses of each . . .

Toby Maguire

Firstly, Toby Maguire is for an entire generation the original and first cinematic live-action Spider-man. Yes, we there was Nicholas Hammond too! But his “movie”, The Amazing Spider-man (1977) was a TV movie, so, just feature length episodes, really. Also, it’s unlikely he’s a part of the MCU multiverse! Mostly, Maguire was fantastic in the role. There was great knowledge of the comic-book traits of the character of Spiderman shown. Maguire captured Peter Parker’s social awkwardness well, but there were some faults, too.

As a character study, Maguire’s performance as Peter Parker was wonderful. However, he was perhaps just a little too old for role. That’s not Maguire’s fault, and that arguably made the job even harder. But we won’t mention that scene though, in Spiderman 3 (2007) . . .

Andrew Garfield

As the second of our Spider-man actors on the list, we have the awesome Andrew Garfield. He first appeared as the famous web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-man (2012). Andrew Garfield had the unenviable job of following on from Toby Maguire. There were always going to be people who didn’t like him, solely because he wasn’t Maguire. But Garfield rose (or swung?) to the occasion. He was better as Spiderman than Peter Parker. For example, when he was Spider-man he really brought the comic-book sense of fun to the big screen so well. Garfield should definitely receive praise for his emotional scenes. He depicted a sense of deep loss very skillfully.

Tom Holland

Tom Holland is the latest big-screen Spider-man, and our official MCU Spidey, too. Right from his first scenes, he felt the perfect fit for the role. We finally saw a version of Peter Parker that really seemed like a high-school teenager. Of all of our Spider-man actors, Holland is the only one that arrived “fully formed”. By that we mean we didn’t see him become Spiderman. That was a smart choice. It’s fair to say that Holland has likely benefitted from having the best writing of the three actors. We’ve seen him start out small, and now begin a “lonesome warrior” arc. It seems that Holland will be around for a while yet. We’re looking forward to seeing his next performance.

This isn’t a “rated and ranked” feature. Fans have their personal favourite, between these three Spider-man actors. Primarily, we’re team Spidey — and we love them all. Look out for a Spidey-special, from May The Verse Be With You, swinging your way this Friday . . .

My headcanon is that the Nicholas Hammond Spidey exists in the multiverse 😉
