It really must be said that Obi-Wan Kenobi was a high point of the prequel trilogy. Not only was he charismatic, charming and devoted to the Jedi’s ideals. Kenobi won legions of fans who grew up watching the prequels. Indeed, Ewan McGregor‘s performance. Would have made the late great Alec Guinness proud. As Star Wars fans know, Obi-Wan’s exile on Tatooine is set to be explored in a new Disney plus series. But what would make this show really stand out? Here are some suggestions:
Flashbacks of Anakin before he fell to the dark side
This reviewer was always a fan of Hayden Christensen‘s Anakin. It would be great to see Anakin and Obi-Wan hanging out together in their quieter moments between missions. We could see Kenobi train Skywalker in lightsaber forms and really explore how these two Jedi came to have such a close bond. This could provide some real tear jerking moments. If we see Christensen and McGregor’s characters laughing and joking in one scene. Then a time skip to their Mustafar battle, after which we see Obi-Wan in the present. As he attempts to process and come to terms with all that has happened. This could provide the Kenobi series with real emotional depth.
The Tatooine Star Map as seen in KOTOR
I know, I know; I’m a sucker for anything KOTOR. Nobody can deny that it would be cool though. We could see our exiled Jedi make his way past the Krayt dragon’s giant skeleton only to enter its cave and discover the Rakatan Star Map. We could even see Kenobi meditate or attempt to centre himself. Only for the Jedi Knight to receive a vision of Darth Revan finding the map 4000 years ago. Even if we never see Revan in live action a shout out to this beloved character would make a lot of fans happy. Perhaps Kenobi could even discover Revan’s holocron and be faced with a choice as to whether to keep or destroy it?
Situations where Obi-Wan’s Jedi identity is nearly revealed
Something like this could provide loads of dramatic tension. Maybe a platoon of Stormtroopers (led by an Inquisitor perhaps?) are searching for Jedi on Tatooine. Possibly Obi-Wan’s exploits in a previous episode draw the Empire’s attention, and the last of the Jedi must keep his identity secret. Perhaps Kenobi must save the day without blowing his cover. Which could make for some hair’s breadth scrapes where the Jedi General must use his powers covertly. What if Obi-Wan saves the person who tipped off the Empire’s life? Leading them to deny that there was ever a Jedi on Tatooine. This could make for a really great story about how helping just one person is always worth it.
Flashbacks of Obi-Wan as a youngling
Not only would this be a great opportunity for a young actor. It would also let us see how Obi-Wan’s character pre-Phantom Menace was formed. We could even see Liam Neeson return as Qui-Gon Jinn. Guiding the young Kenobi through his own training. I realise that too many flashbacks might take away from the show’s main story arc. Used sparingly though they could provide some real fan pleasing moments and let us see how one Jedi was formed. Was Obi-Wan always a Jedi Knight exemplar? Was he willful and rash like Anakin, which was why he and Skywalker formed such a close bond. Even if the Kenobi show only hints at these answers it would make for some awesome storytelling.
Meeting Cobb Vanth as a boy
This character has loads of fans. Maybe Kenobi meets Vanth when he was still a slave and frees him? It would be somewhat cliched for Obi-Wan to inspire Cobb Vanth to become the sheriff we all know and love. Maybe if our Jedi Knight slips some food to a young slave boy with a star shaped mark on his back? This alone could tie the Kenobi series into the wider Star Wars cinematic universe and provide another fan pleasing moment. Perhaps we could see Obi-Wan attempt to help Din Djarin’s parents only to find he is unable to? Too many references like this could end up making the show heavy handed and cheesy however.
What would you like to see in the Kenobi series? Do you agree with what I’ve suggested? Please leave a comment and remember, these aren’t the droids you’re looking for.
