Synopsis: In Mxy in the Middle. Supergirl and team must stop Nyxly from vanquishing a familiar face from Supergirl’s past – Mr. Mxyzptlk. Mxy returns and explains Nyxly’s dark history to the super team in the best way he knows how – in song form.
Following up from last week’s show. Dreamer has allowed herself to be tricked into releasing Nyxly from the dreamworld and restoring her powers. Now Supergirl and the team have to deal with it. For help in this matter, they call upon the services of Mr. Mxyzptlk, which inadvertently plays into Nyxly’s hands given that she needs Mxy’s magical energy to power her Crystal. So, now Supergirl and her friends have to protect Mxy while coming up with a way to remove Nxly’s magic.
Thomas Lennon makes a welcome return as Mr. Mxyzptlk. However, I am eternally grateful that Supergirl and her team stopped him from finishing the song. Although admittedly. The lyrics are a slight improvement on ‘I Will Survive’. We also get another great performance from Peta Sergeant as a fully powered Nxly who has a major bone to pick with Mxyzptlk. It’s definitely the guest talent that carries this story.
In as far as the B-Story. We get a solid performance from Katie McGrath as Lena Luther who is looking to learn about her late mother while on a trip to Ireland. Sadly we get a few iffy Irish accents from some of the cast members. But at least the key characters had their accents nailed down pretty well. Emmanuelle Vaugier has a brief part in the story. As she is revealed to be the daughter of one of Lena’s mum’s old friends. She gets one scene, but it’s a really strong scene that helps set the scene for Lena’s mother’s story.
An okay episode that continues the story. I really liked the backstory concerning Lena’s mother and Lena’s skepticism about magic. It will be interesting to see if Lena’s family connections from her mum’s side will have a role to play later on. As with Nxly depowered for now. It’s only a matter of time before she gets her magic back again and created havoc.
