Synopsis: This month on Star Wars. TO ESCAPE THE EMPIRE’S TRAP, THE REBELS SPRING ONE OF THEIR OWN! What’s behind COMMANDER ZAHRA’s quest for revenge against LEIA ORGANA?
The Story
Picking up from where the last issue left off. This month we learn that Darth Vader personally brought Commander Zahra into the fight for her second chance. After a brief flashback sequence, which takes place shortly after events seen in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. We see a determined Commander Zahra lead a boarding party on a mission to try and grab Princess Leia.
The Artwork
Ramon Rosanas continues to pump out some fantastic artwork. The panels in which we see Commander Zahra stalk her prey when she is telling Leia about her experiences while taking potshots are brilliant. The claustrophobic feelings of fear that Rosanas manages to convey with the narrow corridors of Leia’s ship make this issue into an absolute page-turner.
The panels that close out the issue are in Zahra’s quarters on her Star Destroyer. The trophies on the walls give a real insight into Zahra’s nature and perhaps explains why Tarkin chose to teach her about his command style.
Overall
Charles Soule has really added to the Star Wars universe with the creation of Commander Zahra. She is every bit as calculating as Tarkin was and the meeting between her and Princess Leia was brilliantly written with some fantastic dialogue. I also enjoyed the fact that Leia was actually shaken by the meeting having narrowly escaped it with her life. Added to that the speech that Zahra gives about her being orphaned thanks to a terrorist attack by the Rebels is fantastic and sent a chill down my spine.
I look forward to seeing more of Zahra and Leia’s relationship as it unfolds in future issues. It will be interesting to see how this first encounter will affect Leia’s judgment in future stories.
