In Review: MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS (S1 – EP6) Terrifying Miracles

Synopsis: In Terrifying Miracles, Shaw finds an unlikely ally within Monarch as the team has a harrowing run-in. Keiko and Lee grow closer while at a military ball.

The Story

Back in 1955 Keiko and Captain Shaw had to attend a military ball to raise funds for future research. However, when Bill Randa gets a lead on a possible Monster appearance Keiko has to rush off with him, which leaves Shaw to deal with the military hierarchy on his own. Concerned for the safety of Keiko Lee follows her and gets to them just in time to discover that Godzilla survived despite the US military’s best efforts to kill him.

In 2015 Cate, Kentaro, and May are heading for Africa to track down their father Hiroshi who is tracking Godzilla. Fairly soon the kids find themselves reunited with Lee Shaw who has been helped to escape Monarch’s clutches by Duvall who claims to be on their side. As they arrive in Africa they find Hiroshi who is using Gamma Ray simulators to try and lure Godzilla into the open. When he sees Cate and Kentaro who are with Shaw. Hiroshi waves them off as he knows that Godzilla is about to make himself known. As they scramble to escape Godzilla looks Cate in the eye in acknowledgment and then leaves. At this point Cate, Kentaro and May decide to continue following Hiroshi while Shaw and Duvall decide to continue tracking Godzilla.

The Acting

Wyatt Russell and Mari Yamamoto are fantastic as Captain Kee Shaw and Kieko. They play the relationship beats well as Shaw tries to help Kieko relax a little more at the military fundraiser. We also get a great performance from Elisa Lasowski as Duvall who claims to be on the same page as Shaw, but I’m not too sure if she is or not.

Overall

Terrifying Miracles is a solid episode that juxtaposes the events in 1955 brilliantly with the 2015 events via the clever use of the Gamma Ray simulators that they use to lure Godzilla into the open. We still know very little about what Monarch’s original purpose was, but we do get an interesting line of dialogue from Shaw when he splits off from Cate and Kentaro where he claims he is trying to help Godzilla. But help him with what?
