In Review: Big Finish: Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: Born to Die

Dan Starkey, Christopher Ryan, and Jon Culshaw absolutely owned every second in the soundscape. Bravo!
Rutans

Synopsis: The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans has been going on for millennia. It’s a terrible conflict with no care for consequences or collateral damage. Billions have died with no end in sight.

From the outside, these battles may seem disconnected. Sometimes, however, there is a common thread. Unpicking that could destroy everything.

When a trip to the planet Taxodon goes wrong,  the Doctor finds himself with mere hours to prove himself innocent of murdering a Sontaran. As more die, the Doctor and Charley need to uncover the cause. Moreover, they need to find out why the Sontarans are even on this planet.

Review: Big Finish admirably thickens the plot with Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: Born to Die. Moreover, the plot thickens in ways that will likely have significant implications for this millennia-old war.

Story

Writer Tiegan Byrne also acts for Big Finish. As a result, she applies different perspectives to their story-telling process. Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: Born to Die is an expertly crafted jigsaw puzzle pieced together through collaboration, characterization, and world-building.

Indeed, Byrne creates a new world and a new species for this tale. Listeners could be forgiven for thinking they’ve always existed in Big Finish canon.

Additionally, she makes excellent use of Charley’s ever-complicated timeline and prior knowledge. Most importantly, however, Byrne appears to foreshadow genuinely intriguing developments for the conclusion of this arc.

All the while, Byrne gifts her fellow actors with meaty scenes. Those scenes highlight well-honed abilities and a real love of the Doctor’s potato-headed foes.

Acting

The entire cast is excellent. That said, I have to single out the actors playing Sontarans. Dan Starkey, Christopher Ryan, and Jon Culshaw owned every second in the soundscape. Bravo!

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: Born to Die is another great yarn in this saga. I can’t wait for Doctor Who: Sontarans vs Rutans: In Name Only next month.
