Daredevil, Jessica Jones & Luke Cage Have New Home on Disney +

Marvel Confirms That Disney + is the new home for their grittier superheros...

Since they were canceled a couple of years back. There’s been no end of speculation about the streaming future of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and of course Daredevil. All these shows were suddenly canceled when Disney + was announced back in 2018/19. But they remained on Netflix with an uncertain future until Daredevil made a brief cameo appearance in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, it now seems that the streaming future of these shows, which helped launch the Marvel Brand onto streaming services will now reside and take pride of place on Disney +, but will most likely come under the streamer’s more mature content.

Disney and Marvel made the announcement yesterday after what has been a few days of media speculation about the shows. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First, The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive on Disney+ on March 16.

“Disney+ has served as the home for some of the most beloved brands in the industry, and the addition of these live-action shows brings more from the Marvel brand together, all in one place,” said Michael Paull, President of Disney Streaming. “We have experienced great success with an expanded content offering on Disney+ across our global markets and are excited to continue that here in the U.S. as well by offering our consumers not only great content with the new Marvel additions, but also a set of features that help ensure a viewing experience most suitable for them and their family.”

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage were launched as their own shows over an 18 month period and eventually came together for a one-off mini-series called The Defenders. The shows did relatively well with viewers. However, Iron Fist proved the be the weak link for a number of reasons. But it’s fair to say that these shows have their fans.

The arrival of these grittier shows on Disney + comes in tandem with a new update to the streamer’s parental controls in the US.Disney revealed that these changes will allow users to select content rating restrictions for each profile on an account, alongside the addition of a PIN code lock.

Since learning of the announcement of these shows coming to Disney+. Many have shared concerns that the more mature themes of these shows may get censored due to Disney’s policies regarding censorship. Cheo Hodari Coker, showrunner and creator of Luke Cage, expressed similar concerns “They’re going to do what they do. It’s theirs,” wrote Coker. “I just hope they don’t sit on it for years to allow for an easier reboot or re-air it with a different mix, or the N-Word muted. I’d love to do commentary tracks or the original credits.” The improved parental controls maybe Disney’s way of combating some of the darker elements of the Netflix series.

As someone who enjoyed all these series. Particularly Daredevil and Jessica Jones. I can see why there would be concerns. But I kind of hope the new parental system that Disney is putting in place will prove enough of a deterrent from these shows being viewed by younger viewers.
