Published by Marvel Comics, the second issue of Star Wars: Kanan The Last Padawan, is nothing short of great Star Wars / comic storytelling, brought to us by the series creators; Greg Weisman (writer), Pepe Larraz (illustrator) and David Cureil (colorist).
In issue two, we see the young and very inexperienced Caleb Dume (Kanan Jarrus), padawan of recently slain Jedi Master Depa Billaba, fleeing for his life from the very clone troopers who until very recently he thought of as friends.
What is most interesting is how utterly unprepared a Jedi padawan is for survival in the everyday life of most sentients in the galaxy. In fact, if not for the generosity of Janus Kasmir who allowed him to bath, sleep and eat aboard his space craft, the young padawan would surely have been captured in the web of Palpatine’s Order 66.
One of the most telling lines from this issue would also seem to go a long way in defining how the soon to be Kanan Jarrus will lead his life, “You lie, you cheat, you steal to survive.”
By the end of the book, we see the young Caleb begin down the road that will come to define the next fifteen years of his life as he steals Janus Kasmir’s starship in order to travel back to the Jedi Temple after receiving the Jedi Emergency signal from Coruscant. The issues ends with the desperate padawan in orbit around the Republic’s home planet as he is surrounded by deadly Republic Arc star fighters.
Larraz’s art and Cureil’s colors are simply beautiful and really bring Weisman’s unfolding secret history of Kanan Jarrus to life. The book and series are to date very entertaining and great fun, which should be picked up and read by all fans of Star Wars Rebels!
