Scifipulse recently had the honour of interviewing Nadia Albina. Doctor Who fans will know her as Di. Who seemed to have a flirtation with John Bishop‘s character Dan. Additionally, Nadia has lent her voice to Assassin’s Creed; Origins. As well as appearing in many stage and screen productions. In this interview, Nadia gives advice for actors who are just starting out as well as her thoughts on Russell T. Davies‘s Doctor Who return.
SFP: What was your experience of working on Doctor Who like?
Nadia Albina: My experience of working on Doctor Who was fabulous. It felt like a big family and the people and the team were amazing. I was quite nervous about being on such a huge show with such a dedicated fanbase but I did not want it to end. It was wonderful.
SFP: You played a security guard in Russell T. Davies’s Years and Years. What are your thoughts on Russell T. Davies returning as Doctor Who showrunner?
Nadia Albina: I think Russell T Davis is a brilliant writer and think it will be great to have him back on Doctor Who.
SFP: Do you think the film and TV industry has changed since you first started out?
Nadia Albina: I think that the industry has changed a lot since I first started. I had some very tough years where I questioned whether I should continue because so many doors felt closed to me. With time, a lot of time things changed and one job felt like it lead to another which feels almost unbelievable to the me that started out. Many casting directors have been such champions of diversity and it feels like the time has come for that to be an issue that is addressed authentically within the industry.
SFP: Following on from that question, do you have any advice for actors who are just starting out?
Nadia Albina: I would say that the pandemic hasn’t made things easy. My advice would be keep going, make contacts where you can, build relationships with casting directors, get an agent who you feel comfortable with and see what roads open up. it is about hanging in if things don’t happen immediately.
SFP: I see from your IMDB page that you were a voice in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. How does voice acting differ from acting on stage or on TV?
Nadia Albina: It doesn’t ‘t really differ that much. It is still for me about portraying someone as well as I can, understanding them and communicating that. It is similar to telly as you can do a line or section over and over again but it is so much fun! I love doing voice work as much as telly or stage.
SFP: Please can you tell us something about what might happen to Di in Doctor Who?
Nadia Albina: I can’t tell you anything about Di! She is a cracker of a character and was just wanting to go on a date!
SFP: What actors are you inspired by?
Nadia Albina: I’m inspired by so many actors, I love and admire so many but am especially impressed by the ones who can write and star in their own material. I think it is a wonderful thing to be able to make your own work.
SFP: And finally, if you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 people, real or fictional, would you like to come and rescue you?
Nadia Albina: I would like my husband and daughter to come and rescue me. Can’t pick anymore! obviously all my friends and my family but that is way more than 5!
Scifipulse would like to extend our warmest thanks and very best wishes to Nadia Albina for so graciously taking the time to answer our questions.
