MTV Provides A First Look At ‘The Shannara Chronicles’

This new MTV drama features 'Arrow' stars Austin Butler and Manu Bennett in key roles.

MTV, who have been best known as a music channel for some time took their first steps into original genre programming a few years back when it commissioned an updated more dramatic series based on the ‘Teenwolf’ movies. It’s a series that has brought the channel much success.

Earlier this year it was revealed that the channel would be taking another leap into the world of fantasy with ‘The Shannara Chronicles,’ which is a swords and sorcery series based on the book series by Terry Brooks.

This new MTV drama features ‘Arrow’ stars Austin Butler and Manu Bennett in key roles.

The series’ ensemble also include Indiana Jones‘ John Rhys-Davies, Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Downton Abbey actress Poppy Drayton.

The shows centres on a half-human/half-elf named Wil (Austin Butler, The Carrie Diaries), an Elven princess named Amberle (Poppy Drayton), and a full human named Eretria (Ivana Baquero of Pan’s Labyrinth fame) who set out on a quest to save The Four Lands from a Demon army. The world of Shannara is clearly sprawling, and MTV seems to have respected the challenge of adapting it by throwing the requisite budget down to really bring Brooks’ words to life. The legendary John Rhys-Davies plays King Eventine, which is super cool. This is definitely not ‘Awkward’ or ‘Faking It’ or ‘Catfish.’
