Ito Aghayere appeared in last week’s episode of Picard Season Two, “Watcher”. We didn’t mention much about her in the review, as we felt that she deserved her own feature. So, here it is” We’ll be offering our view, and also offering a possible theory on things . . .
Firstly, we’d like to say that we feel Ito Aghayere did a fine job of playing Guinan. Guinan has always been a fan favorite, and having a recast actor play her was a big deal. Furthermore, there can’t be many more iconic actors than the legendary Whoopi Goldberg. That’s one big hat (rather than pair of shoes) to fill! But the talented actress did a great job as a younger Guinan. Guinan has always been a very complex character, and seeing her as angry and screwed up worked really well, because of Ito Aghayere’s great depiction.
Is It Guinan? . . .
It’s almost certain that Ito Aghayere is playing Guinan, but could it actually be one of Guinan’s daughters? Whether it is or not, that may have worked out well as a plot device. It would have prevented a recast. But, there wouldn’t have been the dynamic between Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) and Guinan. Guinan was too wonderful and important a character, to not appear in Star Trek ever again.
TNG Significance and Plot Hole?
Last week Screenrant ran a great explainer article about a potential plot hole from TNG. Quite rightly, they reminded everyone that Q has changed the timeline. So, Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) hadn’t met in the events of “Time’s Arrow Parts I&II”. But of course, Picard does remember that, because he’s been “shifted” into a new timeline, with the full knowledge of the one that he’s realy from. Fortunately, Guinan is able to remember things “out of time”, which we know from “Yesterday’s Enterprise”.
Will Guinan Face Off Against Q?
We’ve seen Guinan and Q (John De Lancie) have spats before. However, we know few details of their past. Perhaps the Q Continuum and the El-Aurian race have been in conflict. We might get to find out more. But what we really want to see is Guinan and Q (John De Lancie) face off on screen again, properly. Maybe Guinan is capable of challenging Q, and could well be immune to his powers . . .
