Synopsis: VisionQuest follows the rebooted Vision as he searches for identity and purpose, while a bounty on his head forces him out of hiding.

The Story

Picking up where WandaVision left off, VisionQuest sees the rebooted Vision trying to build a new life and find a purpose. However, he struggles with memories of his time with the Avengers and the simulated family life he shared with Wanda, as he lacks an emotional connection to them. Helping him navigate this are the various AIs living within him, including J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s former AI, E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y., U. and D.U.M.-E..

To stay under the authorities’ radar, Vision has been working at a pub he and Wanda used to frequent in Edinburgh. When a hit squad attacks the pub and kills its landlady, Fiona, he finds himself on the run once more. It soon becomes apparent that Ultron, who also lives within Vision, contacted a bounty hunter called Paladin to track him down. However, Ultron underestimated Paladin’s relentless determination to pursue his target until he is captured or dead.

To lure Vision into a trap, Paladin discovers that Thomas, a son from the WandaVision simulation, survived and has been living as a petty thief around London. He abducts Thomas and has him confined under high security in a mental health hospital. Unsure whether Thomas really is his son, Vision nevertheless attempts a rescue, egged on by Ultron.

Acting

Paul Bettany carries the show really well as Vision, backed by a strong supporting cast. Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., an AI who helps Vision navigate social situations, while James D’Arcy’s J.A.R.V.I.S. handles administration and security. Todd Stashwick is fantastic as Paladin, making him a formidable villain.

Overall

This was a strong start, with some interesting conversations between Vision and Ultron about the nature of humanity. The episode ends on an exciting cliffhanger as Vision and Thomas escape from Paladin, though their freedom comes at a cost. I look forward to next week’s episode to see what becomes of them.
