The Speed of Thought

Synopsis: In ‘The Speed of Thought’. Barry suddenly gains the power of speed thinking, he attempts to use his new gift to save Iris. While Barry is thrilled with his new power, Cisco is hesitant to trust it. Meanwhile, Eva must face a shattering truth.

The Story

Still grieving the loss of Nash Wells and the Council of Wells. Barry and his friends hold a service to the man they helped bring them all so far. After this service, Cisco shows Barry some new tech and the two formulate plans to go after Mirror Master and collect some dark matter from her. This plan is helped by the fact that Barry has gained the power of speed thinking, which he uses to formulate plans and basically predict every possible outcome. But as his thinking gets faster. His emotional intelligence and heart diminish.

By the time Cisco, Allegra and Frost spot this. It is too late because Barry is several moves ahead of them. With Mirror Master exposed to the world and Team Flash being out of commission. We can only really guess what the outcome will be at this point. But there could be some hope as we are served with the craziest of cliffhangers to date.

The Acting

Grant Gustin puts in one hell of a performance this week as Barry and The Flash lose their ability to empathize. Seeing what the Flash would be like with speed thought starts out as quite fun to watch. But it is not very long before we get shown a darker side to it. Gustin does a great job of removing much of the emotion from his voice to a point where he almost sounds like a Robot.

Also, it was great to see Carlos Valdes return as Cisco. The scene where Cisco and the team try to take Barry in hand was brilliantly done. As were the scenes where Cisco tries to reason with Barry and convince him that his speed force was a negative consequence of the artificial speed force they’d created for him.

Overall

A fantastic episode in which we get a nice mix of comedy, drama and action. The chase between The Flash and Frost through Star City was particularly impressive and fun to watch. And the cliffhanger ending will no doubt have us all speculating until the next episodes.
