Heart of the Matter

Synopsis: In part one of ‘Heart of the Matter.’ Barry and Iris greet their future children, XS and Bart, only for a shocking secret to threaten their new familial harmony. The Godspeed war intensifies and threatens to destroy Central City.

The Story

XS and Bart have travelled back in time to get help off of Barry and Team Flash. We learn that The Godspeed is Bart’s Arch Nemesis. As such Barry and Iris who has returned from the Still Force try to keep Bart out of harm’s way. But when The Godspeed kidnaps Jay Garrick who has just got his speed back. It seems like a case of history repeating for the impetuous Bart. So, now Barry and Nora aka XS have to go after him.

Elsewhere, Allegra is racked with guilt over the death of her sister in last week’s show and it is having a negative effect on her powers. This proves to be a problem because it means she is unable to charge some technology that Barry needs with microwaves. Thankfully, Cisco Ramone has returned for a visit and looks set to help Chester and the tech team out with some of their issues. Meanwhile, Caitlin and Cecille are still trying to help August Heart the original Godspeed get his memory back.

The Acting

Jordan Fisher makes an immediate impression as the somewhat impulsive Bart Allen who has his own unique way of fighting The Godspeeds. The actor makes the character immediately likeable, but also very obviously in need of guidance. The onscreen chemistry between Fisher and Jessica Parker Kennedy is very believable in that they portray the brother and sister dynamic really well. The scenes where they reconnect as a family are really cute. Particularly the moment where they both run up to greet Cecille.

Grant Gustin and Candice Patton make for believable parental figures as Barry and Iris lay down the law.

‘Heart of the Matter’ proves to be a strong opening installment for next week’s season finale. The familial relationships were well written and presented. The sequences with The Godspeeds got ever more intense as the episode escalated events. The final moment in which we see Barry project himself into August Heart’s mind was a somewhat edge-of-the-seat moment. Overall, a much tighter episode than we got in last week’s show.
