Synopsis: Supergirl finally learns the truth about Lena while tangling with Leviathan. J’onn J’onnz makes a discovery about his brother’s whereabouts.
Review: After what seems weeks of waiting. Lena finally reveals her hand to Supergirl, but it could not have come at a worse time for Team Supergirl.
The Story
Having obtained the amulet from Andrea in last week’s episode Lena is set to put her plans into motion, but a visit from Lethiathan puts pay to that as she and Supergirl are faced with a new enemy in the form of Rama Khan who has the power to shape the earth and weaponize it against people.
While Lena and Supergirl go to the fortress of solitude to find a weapon to help them defeat Rama Khan J’onn J’onnz meditates and has a discussion with his father about how he should deal with his brother Malefic J’onzz. His father’s suggestion comes as a bit of a surprise to J’onn, but he follows the advice given and is finally in a better place.
Back at the Fortress Rama Kahn tries to attack, but is sent off with a bloody nose, which is when Lena reveals her true plans to Supergirl and traps her in her own Fortress of Solitude.
The Acting
Mitch Pileggi who is best known to fans of ‘The X-Files’ as Agent Skinner makes for a fantastic villain as he takes on Supergirl in order to try and get to Lena so he can have the amulet back. Pileggi does well with some of the physical demands of the role given that he is in his mid-60s. Though it is his villainous demeanor throughout his scenes, which really sells us on the danger that Rama Khan presents.
The scenes where Lena reveals her hurt feelings to Supergirl are heartrending. You can understand her pain given that to her it is history repeating when you look at how her relationship was soured with Andrea. Melissa Benoist and Katie McGrath both pull off an amazing performance where we see Kara make a plea for forgiveness. The line “You shouldn’t have treated me like a villain’ has a particular sting to it. Especially given that Lena seems to be moving more toward a villainous path.
Overall
Another strong outing for the show. I loved the fact that some good comes out in the end when we see J’onn and Malefic forgive each other and reunite as brothers. Hopefully Malefic gets a recurring role on the series and isn’t written out completely when the season closes out next year.
