Synopsis: In Chapter Eight of Summer School. With his world crashing down around him, Rick focuses his attention on protecting Solomon Grundy.
Having successfully driven Yolanda into quitting the JSA. Eclipso sets his sights on Beth who he perceives to be the weakest link on the team. However, Beth has a couple of surprises of her own as she has managed to contact the original Dr. Mid-Nite.
Meanwhile, a troubled Rick focuses his attention on Solomon Grundy. However when a hunting party is called to go after a bear that has been attacking people. Rick panics and calls upon Courtney and Pat to help him track Grundy down before the hunters can. However, it all turns out to be a hallucination created by Eclipso to get Rick to quit the JSA.
Cameron Gellman puts in a wonderful performance as Rick who has been having it pretty tough with his deadbeat Uncle. But has been trying to find solace in trying to tame Solomon Grundy. The scene where Rick and Grundy sit down together is well earned. Especially given that it has been set up over the last few weeks. This scene makes it so much more of an emotional roller coaster for Rick when he hallucinates a scenario where Grundy has murdered a young girl.
We also get a wonderful performance from Anjelika Washington as Beth who has her own experience with Eclipso. The scene where Eclipso tries to belittle her for being a little overweight and makes a racist comment about her was really nicely done. And Beth’s reaction to it was bloody brilliant. As was the moment where she takes back her power from Eclipso and puts on the goggles, which block the hallucinations.
This was a great episode for Beth’s character and also an episode, which shows us Eclipses Achilles heel. In that, he can only gain power through your fears. All that said. I am beginning to wonder if pretty much most of this series has been a hallucination on the part of the main characters. For example. Are Beth’s parents really divorcing or is that a hallucination that Eclipso had in place before he escaped from the black diamond?
Overall. Chapter Eight of Summer School delivers some great drama but also leaves us with some interesting questions. We also see Rick destroy his hourglass when he sees what he has been driven to do.
