return

Synopsis: The return of Moff Gideon has scuppered Bo-Katan’s plans to retake Mandalore, which forces her soldiers to retreat and regroup.

The Story

Picking the story up from last week. Bo-Katan and her forces have returned to Mandalore to learn that Moff Gideon has built his base of operations on what remained of one of their old cities. After an initial shootout, Din Djarin is captured and Grogu gets separated from Bo-Katan and her forces who have retreated in order to await reinforcements.

The season finale picks up with Din Djarin being escorted by Imperial Trooper to a cell, but Din Djarin manages to overpower them with a little help from Grogu who uses his new G-12 robot suit to help his friend escape and proceeds to go after Moff Gideon. Meanwhile, Axe Woves has made it back to Bo-Katan’s ship and has ordered all the soldiers to meet up with Bo-Katan on the surface so they can attack Moff Gideon’s forces and take back their home planet.

The Acting

Pedro Pascal and Katee Sackhoff get a lot of action beats in this final episode of the season. But it’s their scenes with Moff Gideon who is played brilliantly by Giancarlo Esposito that really make this episode worth the cost of a Disney subscription. The look of pure anger and race on Sackhoff’s face during her duel scene with Gideon is genuinely scary.

Overall

A satisfying season finale that could work as a series finale should Disney decide to end the story at this point. We get lots of action as we see Mandalore get retook and we get a great duel between Bo-Katan and Moff Gideon. As endings go. This is a pretty decent one that sets a few things up for a fourth season in which we may see Din Djarin and his apprentice Din Grogu doing a few jobs for the New Republic for Captain Carson Teva.
