Story

‘Kayshon His Eyes Open’ felt very different from last week’s episode, ‘Strange Energies‘. For example, the “problem of the week” was less dramatic. Lower Decks manages to smartly emulate traditional episode formats, circa “TNG” era. And, there’s a ton of references, which are handled superbly. The sub-plot concerns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and pays homage to classic episode Second Chances.

Voices and Characterization

Again, wonderful to see (and more importantly, hear . . .) Jonathan Frakes as Riker. Frakes sends up his character with wonderful humour and comedic skill. Jack Quaid showed some brilliant ability to once more present the character of the hapless Boimler, too.

Animation

What’s great to see is the huge range of aliens that Star Trek has spawned, over the years. Animation certainly makes it easier to include them. There are many in ‘Kayshon His Eyes Open’, and the features and traits of certain species really are captured very well.

Overall

Another good week for Lower Decks. Whatever else people may say about the show the writers really know their Trek history. The best way to enjoy watching this show, which this episode was a great example of, is to embrace it. After all, Star Trek should be fun, too.

At some point during the run of Season Two of Star Trek: Lower Decks, May The Verse Be With You will run a thematic special . . .
