Synopsis: In A Normal Amount of Rage Jen Walter’s world is turned upside down after a freak accident leaves her with superpowers.
While preparing for a court case. Top Lawyer Jennifer Walters recounts the day that she first became She-Hulk and how it impacted her life. Along the way, we learn a few interesting differences between Jen and Bruce when it comes to having control over when they Hulk out. The biggest thing is that for Jen it only takes a normal amount of rage for her to change. Added to this she can seemingly change back and forth between her normal and hulk self without having to go to sleep or practice any kind of mindfulness techniques.
Tatiana Maslany establishes her role as Jen Walter’s pretty quickly and quirky would be a word that I’d use to describe this character. The writing very much informs her performance and it is helpful that most of her scenes in this episode are with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Smart Hulk. Maslany gets all of the best lines of course and one of the best lines is when Jen points out that women are anxious and feel rage quite a lot of the time. Especially when it comes to dealing with inappropriate behavior from men that do not respect their boundaries. The chemistry between Maslany and Ruffalo throughout the episode is fun to watch and brings a lot of great comedy moments. The scene where they are beating each other up is hilarious. There was one point when Jen was going to grab hulk by the foot and I was half hoping that she’d toss him through the air like an Olympic hammer thrower.
As to the rest of the cast. We don’t really get a great deal from them. But am sure that will change in the weeks ahead.
A Normal Amount of Rage was a pretty solid opening episode. I really enjoyed learning some of the differences between Jen’s Hulk and Bruce’s Hulk. It will be interesting to learn more about Jen’s world in the weeks ahead and see what kind of villains or villains that she will go up against. We already have a pretty big clue about that with the inclusion of Tim Roth in the cast as Emil Blonsky who Hulk went up against in The Incredible Hulk movie.
