In Review: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (S1 – EP9) Axis Mundi

Shaw and May search for Cate and make a startling discovery.

Synopsis: In Axis Mundi, Shaw and May search for Cate and make a startling discovery. Kentaro struggles with his loss.

The Story

Picking the story up from last week’s episode. Shaw, May, and Cate have fallen through the portal into the Hollow Earth where all the titans live. Having found themselves separated from Cate. Shaw and May begin a dangerous search for her.

In some flashback scenes to 1962, we see the younger Shaw about to embark on a mission to learn more about the Hollow Earth. We get an initial scene of Shaw telling a young Hiroshi Randa that he is going on a dangerous mission. Hiroshi is the son of Keiko who was supposedly killed in Kazakhstan back in 1952 when she was dragged through the portal by a Titan. The mission to Hollow Earth goes wrong and Shaw is assumed dead and Monarch gets shut down by its Government partners. Bill is determined to keep it going and must somehow have done so as we find ourselves brought forward in time to 1982 when Lee has turned up in a Monarch hospital facility, which is operated by an older Hiroshi who has some rather complex feelings about his Uncle Lee suddenly turning up unaged after having gone missing 20 years before.

In 2015 Kentaro, Tim, and Natalia Verdugo somehow managed to survive the implosion of the Kazakhstan portal. Rather angry at the problems that Lee’s actions have caused. Verdugo cuts Kentaro loose from Monarch and sends him home with his distraught mother.

Back in the Hollow Earth Cate awakens to find herself rather close to a titan that looks like a prehistoric take on a wild boar. She is rescued at the last minute by Keiko who has seemingly been surviving in the Hollow Earth.

The Acting

Wyatt Russell puts in a really strong performance in this episode. The opening scene where we see Lee trying to reassure an 11 or 12-year-old Hiroshi that he will be alright was nicely done and very believable.

We also get a strong performance from Ren Watabe who does a brilliant job of selling Kentaro’s grief at suddenly losing his best friend and newly found sister.

Another fantastic episode that ends with a fantastic twist.
