Synopsis: This month in Picard’s Academy. Time’s up! It’s Evasive Maneuvers exam day, the only shot Picard has at graduating early…and getting off Earth and far away from home. He’s as ready as he can be and actually feels like he can trust some of his group partners. But little does he know, that their first test in space will bring an unexpected challenge—one the cadets would never find in their textbooks!

The Story

The big day has come. After having pretty much-messed everything up during his mock run-through of the mission in the last issue. Picard has to learn to trust in his fellow cadets if he has any chance of passing the Evasive Manouvers exam. After being briefed that they will be facing a simulated Romulan attack. The cadets must work together to figure out a way of defeating a powerful enemy, but what happens if the mission’s safeties get cut off due to a loss of contact with Starfleet?

The Artwork

Ornella Greco does a solid job on the art for this issue. The art continues to hold to the kind of Lower Decks style that we have seen in previous issues. One of the best panels in this book is when we see Picard and his fellow cadets running through the corridors in a mad rush to get to Engineering, but suddenly find they have been boarded by Romulans.

Overall

A fun issue that develops the story and also gives us a bit of growth for Picard who started as being a rather self-obsessed individual in the first couple of issues. Picard is beginning to show faith and trust in the other Cadets around him and we are starting to see glimmers of the Captain that Jean Luc will become in the future.

Overall a solid issue that leaves us with a nice cliffhanger to keep us guessing to the next issue.
