The Stories

Freevee thrilled Leverage fans by dropping a triple whammy of episodes on us yesterday with three great new stories to launch the second season of the spin-off from the original Leverage series.

The Debutante Job

Sophie brings Harry back into the team to help a journalist investigating the corrupt president of a small East European nation. However, when the journalist is kidnapped, our team has to infiltrate a London Ball to rescue him.

The One Man’s Trash Job

The Team takes on a shipping company that has been dumping plastic and garbage in the sea, which has been having a bad effect on a local shrimping business. When the team learns that the owner of the shipping company has an interest in rare antiquities they set about hooking him. But hit a snag when they learn that his authenticator is a former associate of Sophies.

The Tournament Job

The Team slips into the world of E-Sports when they learn that a Team Manager is exploiting young gamers by isolating them from their families by promising them the dream of being E-Sports legends.

All three of these opening episodes were pretty strong. But I have a bit of a soft spot for the third episode that focused its attention on E-Sports. Which is something that the series has never covered before.

The Acting

Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Aleyse Shannon, and Noah Wyle are great in their roles of Sophie, Elliot, Parker, Breanna, and Harry. And the opening episode brings back the fantastic Aldis Hodge as Alec Hardison who is basically a recurring presence on the show as the actor’s schedule in films and other commitments don’t allow him the time needed to be a series regular like he was in the original run. That being said Aleyse Shannon’s Breanna character has been a great replacement for Hardison and gets to evolve the character and is especially good in The Tournament Job as she gets to pretty much lead that con by being the insider.

As far as the guest talent goes. We get a fun performance from Steve Coulter as a Kieth Richard’s styled guitarist that helps Sophie with the con in The Debutante Job. While Damian O’Hare is great as Sophie’s old associate in The One Man’s Trash Job. Likewise, we got great performances from Steve Han, Ivan Mok, and Hawn Tran as the three credited members of the E-Sports team in The Tournament Job.

Overall

As stated above. It was the third episode that stood out from these three offerings for a number of reasons. Firstly, Aleyse Shannon’s performance as Breanna showed some character growth for the character. Secondly the fact that it went out of its way to do a pretty good job of portraying E-Sports. And finally, the juxtaposition of Elliot Spencer’s kick-ass fight with James Preston Rogers Serbian heavy with the fighting game that was being played at the Tournament was brilliant to watch.

Overall. It is nice to see the show back and adding to the catalog of great new stories that started in the first season.
