Synopsis: After stopping at one of his favorite houses while delivering toys as Santa. Scott is shocked to learn that after 28 years on the job that time has flown by. Moreover, he also seems to be losing weight as well as his Christmas magic, which sees him having to consider his future role in the Christmas business.

The Story

After having paid a visit to the home of one of the kids that he originally delivered toys to in the 90s. Scott is shocked to find Sara has fully grown up and no longer believes in Santa Clause or the spirit of Christmas. Added to this it seems that Scott is losing his Christmas Magic, which causes some grief when he has to leave Sara’s home through the door as opposed to the Chimney. As he returns to the North Pole he undergoes a medical of sorts and is found to be perfectly fine. But his family life is far from normal as his two teenage Children Cal and Sandra long to see the real world and be around real kids their own age. Also Scott’s wife Carol also wishes to have some of her old life back as she finds the stereotype of Mrs. Clause to be somewhat stifling.

Making matters worse is the fact that the world is running low on Christmas Spirit, which makes Scott’s quest to find a replacement Santa Clause all the more important. However, when he fails to persuade his firstborn son Charlie to take on the mantle. The Elves intervene and look to bring in failing toy inventor and businessman Simon Choksi as the replacement Santa for Scott.

The Acting

Tim Allen slips easily back into his role of Scott Calvin aka Santa as does Elizabeth Mitchell as Coral Calvin aka Mrs. Clause. Devin Bright is hilarious as Santa’s main Elf Noel and the relationship between Noel and his somewhat uber-smart wife Betty (Matilda Lawler) gets used to great effect in the second episode in which Scott slowly comes to a decision to retire.

In counter to all the North Pole stuff. We get great performances from Kal Penn and Rupali Redd as toy maker Simon Choksi and his young Daughter Grace who both think they may have seen the big guy and his sleigh.

Overall

It looks like Disney is trying to pull out all the stops with this show and it really shows. However, the first episode perhaps relies a little too much on nostalgia for the original movies as it serves up a lot of the cheesy Christmas Jokes and fun that made the films so successful but by the second episode, we start seeing a little bit more nuance as we see Scott’s teenage kids wanting to know a life outside of the North Pole. But perhaps the most interesting question that is going to be explored here is what happens when a Santa retires or even worse expires. Added to which. How come we didn’t see any of the Elves regret the loss of the previous Santa who Scott wound up replacing?

Either way. I’m invested in this show. As I can’t resist a bit of Christmas fantasy.
