Synopsis: In Shadows in the Math, Gaal and Hari advance their plans on Ignis. Empire grapples with an unforeseen prediction. Pritcher enlists help to investigate the Mule.
The Story
With the Third Crisis looming, Gaal and Hari intensify their efforts on Ignis, awakening periodically from cryosleep to build the Second Foundation. Hari remains awake longer, training the emerging Mentalics in psychohistory, while Gaal focuses on strengthening their telepathic defenses. Hari is visibly aging, hinting that his cloned body may not have much time left.
On Trantor, the Empire reels from a devastating new prediction revealed by Demerzel via the Prime Radiant—one so bleak it sends Cleon Day spiraling into hedonistic denial. In contrast, Dusk, seeking control over fate, secretly commissions a black-hole weapon.
Elsewhere, Han Pritcher recruits Toran and Bayta Mallow to infiltrate the Mule’s inner circle on Kalgan, aiming to uncover the secrets behind the telepathic conqueror’s growing power.
With threats rising on all fronts—failing math, psychic war, and empire-ending tech—the galaxy stands on the brink of collapse.
Acting
Lou Llobell continues to anchor the series with a grounded performance, conveying Gaal’s growing sense of responsibility as she trains the Mentalics to withstand the Mule’s psychic influence. She balances quiet determination with vulnerability, making Gaal’s burden feel personal and urgent. Jared Harris brings gravitas to an older, wearier Hari, subtly reflecting the toll time and sacrifice have taken on his cloned body. His scenes have a weighty calm, befitting a man racing to pass on everything before it’s too late.
Cassian Bilton puts in a notably strong turn as Brother Dawn, stepping confidently into a more diplomatic role. His interaction with Cherry Jones’s Ambassador Quent is a standout — layered with charm, intelligence, and a sharp edge that hints at unexpected growth. Bilton and Jones play well off each other, with Jones delivering her usual composed authority, shaken just enough to sell the moment.
Overall
“Shadows in the Math” is another solid installment, focused on laying critical groundwork for the looming Third Crisis involving the Mule. Much like the early episodes of previous seasons, this chapter leans heavily into character development and world-building. It prioritizes information, foreshadowing, and careful pacing — offering viewers plenty of clues and context that are likely to pay off in the episodes to come. While action takes a back seat for now, the show’s pattern suggests that these quieter moments will culminate in more explosive confrontations as the season progresses and various plot threads begin to collide.
