Synopsis: In A Song for the End of Everything. A Mysterious new pirate with terrifying abilities – known as the Mule – catches the attention of the Foundation and Empire.
The Story
Picking the story up 152 years after the Second Crisis, A Song for the End of Everything marks the rise of the Mule—the mysterious pirate figure Gaal Dornick dreamt of throughout much of Season 2.
The episode opens on Kalgan, a pleasure planet with no allegiance to either the Foundation or the Empire. There, we witness Archduke Bellarion confront a new adversary: the Mule. This enigmatic figure, wielding powerful psychic abilities, manipulates Bellarion into taking his own life before claiming his signet ring and control over Kalgan. The Mule’s chilling pronouncement that humanity has only four months before descending into darkness sets a grim and foreboding tone for the season ahead.
Meanwhile, Gaal Dornick awakens from centuries of cryosleep on Ignis, plagued by visions of the Mule’s devastating future. Her awakening signals a pivotal moment, as she becomes fully aware of the impending Third Crisis predicted by Hari Seldon’s psychohistory. Determined to alter the course of fate, Gaal begins preparing for the threat ahead.
Back on Trantor, the Cleonic dynasty is in decline. Brother Day, lost in hedonism, has become increasingly detached from his imperial responsibilities. In contrast, Brother Dawn—next in line to rule—finds himself grappling with political unrest, including farmer revolts and mounting trade disputes. Demerzel, the Empire’s ever-loyal android advisor, voices growing concern over the Empire’s waning influence and detects troubling anomalies in the Prime Radiant—signs that point toward the Empire’s eventual collapse.
The Foundation, now a dominant force in the Outer Reach, seeks to expand into the Middle Band. However, internal tensions simmer as some traders consider seceding to ally themselves with the Empire. Dr. Ebling Mis, representing the powerful Merchant Princes, enters into a bold and secretive conversation with the AI version of Hari Seldon housed in the Vault, desperate for guidance in the face of rising instability.
As the episode draws to a close, the galaxy teeters on the brink. The Mule’s rise, the Empire’s unraveling, and the Foundation’s inner fractures set the stage for an epic confrontation. With the Third Crisis looming, the key players are pulled into a complex web of political intrigue, prophecy, and survival.
The Acting
Pilou Asbæk is absolutely chilling in his portrayal of the Mule. The scene in which he uses his psychic abilities to force Archduke Bellarion’s entire army to slaughter each other sets the tone for just how ruthless and powerful this new antagonist truly is. Asbæk’s cold, calculated delivery during the moment he compels the Archduke to bite off his own finger in order to hand over the signet ring is particularly harrowing—it instantly establishes the Mule as a terrifying force in the galaxy.
We’re also treated to a tense and compelling exchange between Dr. Ebling Mis (Alexander Siddig) and the AI avatar of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris). This scene begins to hint at cracks forming in the Foundation’s grand plan. The subtle conflict between vision and execution—between the living and the digital—is brought to life through the gravitas of two of the UK’s finest acting heavyweights. Watching Siddig and Harris share the screen is a masterclass in understated tension.
Overall
A Song for the End of Everything does a brilliant job of reintroducing viewers to the intricate universe of Foundation, seamlessly weaving together themes of power, prophecy, and the ongoing struggle between order and entropy. The episode makes for compelling viewing, setting the stage for another narrative-rich season in which the Third Crisis begins to unfold.
