In Review: Daredevil: Born Again (S1 – EP4) Sic Semper Systema

Synopsis: In Sic Semper Systema, As Daredevil begins to investigate the murder of Hector Ayala. Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s darker halves fight to be unleashed.

The Story

Following the events of last week’s episode, Matt Murdock launches an investigation into the murder of Hector Ayala. Meanwhile, Fisk grapples with his inner demons while navigating the bureaucratic nightmare of political office.

As a favor, Matt steps in to defend a homeless man charged with stealing snacks, hoping to secure probation. When he fails, his frustration boils over, highlighting his growing disillusionment with the broken American justice system.

Later, at the scene of Hector’s murder, Matt discovers a custom-made bullet engraved with the Punisher’s logo. This discovery leads him to Frank Castle, who forces Matt to confront some harsh truths—particularly the guilt he still carries over the death of his friend and former law partner, Foggy Nelson.

Could this be the moment that finally pushes Matt back into the mask of Daredevil?

We also get our first look at Muse in which we see him carrying a body along the train track.

The Acting

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio once again deliver superb performances in their respective roles. One standout moment sees Fisk barely restraining himself from unleashing his full wrath on his PA, Daniel, over a press leak. Another highlight is the intense exchange between Matt Murdock and Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), where Castle forces Murdock to confront some hard truths.

Overall

Sic Semper Systema is a strong episode that builds on last week’s events, following Matt’s investigation into Ayala’s death. The introduction of Muse—seen carrying a body along the train tracks—is steeped in mystery and will no doubt spark plenty of fan speculation.

One of the standout moments for me was Matt Murdock’s visit to Frank Castle to question him about the bullet found at Ayala’s crime scene. The tension between the two vigilantes is palpable, and their conversation feels like the turning point that will inevitably push Matt back into the Daredevil mask.
