Synopsis: The trial of Hector Ayala begins. Fisk’s old business associates seek to claim his vacant mantle.
The Story
Still resisting the urge to reclaim his dual life as Daredevil, Matt Murdock remains committed to his law career as he takes on the defense of Hector Ayala, who stands accused of murdering a police officer. But when the star witness unexpectedly changes his testimony, Matt is left with no choice but to reveal Ayala’s secret identity as White Tiger.
Meanwhile, with Wilson Fisk now serving as the Mayor of New York and his wife forced to step away from the criminal underworld, former crime syndicates begin warring over the power vacuum left in their absence.
The Acting
Charlie Cox delivers a brilliant performance as Matt Murdock, passionately defending Hector Ayala and making an impressive case on his behalf. One of the standout moments comes when Murdock puts Hector on the stand, leading to a powerful exchange where Kamar de los Reyes shines as Ayala, steadfastly responding to every question with, “It was the right thing to do.”
Vincent D’Onofrio also delivers a strong performance as Mayor Fisk, who is starting to push the boundaries in his relentless pursuit of his agenda.
Overall
A solid episode that delivered some thrilling courtroom drama, showcasing Matt Murdock in full lawyer mode. I particularly enjoyed the tense meeting between Matt and one of the cops who arrested Hector, just before the court case begins. The closing arguments from both Matt Murdock and D.A. Hochberg were also well-executed, with strong performances from the actors.
Though the episode was light on action, the tension created by the court case more than made up for it.
We also see some intriguing developments on the streets now that Fisk is no longer the dominant crime boss. As the saying goes, nature abhors a vacuum, and sure enough, some of Fisk’s former associates are starting to make bold moves—a great bit of foreshadowing for what’s to come.
