In Review: Creature Commandos (S1 – EP 1 & 2) The Collywobbles & The Tourmaline Necklace

Synopsis: Creature Commandos follows a group of military superhumans comprised of a human leader, a weasel, a Robot GI, Frankenstein’s Bride, and Dr.Nina Mazursky, a scientist with amphibian powers.

The Story

When the world faces a dire threat from the evil sorceress Circe and her cult, Amanda Waller and General Rick Flag must assemble a team capable of taking on supernatural foes. Their solution? The Creature Commandos—a ragtag group consisting of G.I. Robot, Frankenstein’s Bride, Dr. Phosphorus, Weasel, and Dr. Nina Mazursky.

With the team brought together, Rick Flag leads them on their first mission: protecting Princess Ilana Rostovic in the volatile region of Pokolistan.

The opening episodes focus on the team’s formation and their journey to Pokolistan, where Princess Ilana—a member of royalty—quickly becomes enamored with Rick Flag. Meanwhile, Frankenstein’s Bride and Dr. Mazursky embark on a personal side mission to the very place where Victor Frankenstein created the Bride. Through flashbacks, the Bride’s haunting backstory unfolds, juxtaposed with events in the present.

However, when Circe launches a devastating attack on the castle, chaos erupts. The Bride and Dr. Mazursky face intense combat, leaving them severely injured as the team struggles to regroup against the overwhelming power of their enemy.

The Voice Acting

The voice acting in this show is outstanding. Indira Varma is an inspired choice for The Bride—her polished British Received Pronunciation perfectly suits one of DC Comics’ most sarcastic characters. Alan Tudyk also delivers a standout performance as Dr. Phosphorus, bringing depth and flair to the role.

Overall

The first two episodes of Creature Commandos do a fantastic job of setting up the story. The banter between the team members is sharp and engaging, with plenty of genuinely funny moments sprinkled throughout.

The animation style is impressive and perfectly suits the tone of the series, as well as the diverse cast of characters we’re introduced to.
