Raven

Synopsis: In Conspiracy of Raven Jamie has gone missing, while Zoe apparently returns after a lifetime away from the TARDIS. Does even the sinister Time Lord Raven realize the terrifying extent of the conspiracy in which she is embroiled? The Doctor and his friends must fight to uncover the truth.

Review: Doctor Who: The Second Doctor Adventures: Conspiracy of Raven was an excellent continuation of this story line. Moreover, the box set culminated in yet another doozy of a cliffhanger.

Story

Because of that cliffhanger, I won’t be delving into many story details. I will say that the writers truly grasp the importance of internal logic, world-building, and characterization.

“Kippers” by Nicholas Briggs was a character driven piece that introduced a new threat into the mix. Briggs did a wonderful job of putting everyone on the back foot throughout. The story developments felt organic, yet irreversible.

“Catastrophe Theory” by Mark Wright fully reunited a beloved classic Tardis team. This time, though, Jamie and Zoe have the benefits of age and experience.

Additionally, they’re aided by yet another wonderfully conceived alien species. The resulting story is filled with mystery, tension, and love.

“The Vanishing Point” by Mark Wright and Nicholas Briggs pushed the Tardis team to the brink. Briggs and Wright collaborated on a tale relying on the tried and true ancient Time Lord myth trope.

In the process, listeners got a third new alien species. Of course, the stakes they face couldn’t be higher. Granted, we’ll be in for a treat when Briggs and Wright inevitably prove those stakes can be raised.

Acting

The entire cast is superb. That said, I must spotlight two performances. First, Wendy Padbury was absolute perfection playing the now older Zoe.

Second, Emma Noakes matched her legacy costars beat for beat as the titular Raven. By the end, I thoroughly believed Raven’s development and Noakes commitment to her going forward.

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. Doctor Who: The Second Doctor Adventures: Conspiracy of Raven left me on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait to hear how you resolve this one.
