Fugitive

Synopsis: In Fugitive of the Daleks. Years after ending her travels with the Doctor, Vicki finds herself back in the TARDIS. The Doctor desperately needs her help, and she’s only too happy to oblige.

In the process, the two of them fall into a series of perilous encounters. Of course, the dreaded Daleks are never far behind them.

What is the mysterious presence inside the TARDIS? Precisely what damage do the Daleks and their agents intend to cause to the flow of Earth’s history?

The Doctor and Vicki must call upon all their guile and bravery to discover the truth and save the day.

Review: To this day, Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles: Frostfire remains my favorite story in that range. Consequently, I was all ears to hear Vicki’s further adventures with the First Doctor.

Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures: Fugitive of the Daleks by Jonathan Morris didn’t disappoint. He crafted a love letter to the Doctor, Vicki, and the entire Hartnell era.

Story

Morris knows Doctor Who from front to back. As a result, he was able to meld structure, plot, and characterization into a cohesive whole.

Morris managed to surprise me with obscure story points from the First Doctor’s tenure. Then, he delighted me further by organically and seamlessly adding world-building from later eras.

All the while, his characterizations were spot-on, earned, and heartfelt. I was particularly impressed by how Morris tied characterization and foreshadowing together throughout. His approach culminated in a farewell at the end that left me in tears.

Acting

The entire cast is superb. That said, I have to single out Stephen Noonan and Maureen O’Brien.

Noonan is so committed to his performance as the First Doctor that he planned Hartnel-eque flubs. The effect is spooky and awesome.

For her part, O’Brien completely relished adding layers of age and experience to her portrayal of Vicki. Hearing her sprinkle in Vicki’s ageless giggle along the way was worth the price alone.

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. Doctor Who: The First Doctor Adventures: Fugitive of the Daleks was wonderful. I can’t wait to hear how you resolve the cliff-hanger in the next set.
