Synopsis: In ‘If I Can’t Reach You/Let My Song Teach You’, The coven faces their second trial on The Witches’ Road.
The Story
Having passed the first trial and lost one member of their coven in the form of Mrs. Hart. Agatha and the three remaining members attempt a resurrection spell, which backfires and brings Rio into their group who volunteers to take over Mrs. Hart’s role. As they continue to walk the road the group finds another house that looks very familiar to Alice Wu-Gulliver who lost her mother to the road. As the witches enter the house they suddenly find themselves in a 1960s-style recording studio, which is adorned with artist paintings of the various ways in which witches have been tortured over the centuries. As the mystery about the place develops we learn that Alice’s family carries a generational curse and they must all record a new cover version of the song Witches Road in order to protect themselves from it.
The Acting
Aubrey Plaza is fantastic in her role of Rio who has a somewhat complex relationship with Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha that is gradually unraveling as the series progresses. From the little we do know. Rio is hurting because she had to do something to bring Agatha into line, which meant that Rio had to hurt Agatha.
We also got strong performances from Ali Ahn and Sasheer Zamata in their respective roles, Alice and Jennifer.
Overall
It was another fun episode that laid out some more character backstories for the key players but also included some cool set decoration in the form of the various paintings and masks that we see during the scenes where the witches first enter the studio. Also fun was the performance of the Witches Road by Agatha and her coven.
There are still questions to be answered. But the little scraps of information we are being drip-fed is posing all kinds of interesting possibilities.
