Spin-offs

By now most Whovians are aware that Russell T. Davies is returning as showrunner in 2023. A recent Radio Times article mentioned one of Davies’ ideas for the show. Which is to create an MCU style shared universe comprising many different Spin-offs. RTD himself pointed out that he had already done this with Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures. What Doctor Who spinoff would be good in the 2020s though? Grab your long scarf and bow tie as we list 5 of our favourites.

An 8th Doctor Series

Everyone wants this to happen. Paul McGann himself signed a petition for the BBC to make an 8th Doctor spinoff. This reviewer thinks an animated series, perhaps in like vein to The Infinite Quest, would be good for McGann’s Doctor. The storyline could focus on the further adventures of 8 and Josie from the 8th Doctor Titan Comics. This would provide fans with new 8th Doctor content whilst avoiding any continuity snarls. This could possibly be a way to engage younger viewers as well. With a pre-Time War Doctor devoid of the angst that plagued his successors.

A Fugitive Doctor Series

It has been reported that Jo Martinthe Fugitive Doctor, is in the running to become Jodie Whittaker‘s replacement. Indeed, Martin inhabited the role of the Doctor brilliantly during the brief period we got to see her. If she does not end up becoming the 14th Doctor. Then a Fugitive Doctor spinoff could provide this incarnation of the Time Lord with the screen time and character development that she absolutely deserves. Moreover, a series focusing on the Fugitive Doctor could be great for representation, both on-screen and in the writers’ room.

A Paternoster Gang Series

Fans have been calling for this for a while now. There is great potential for a Vastra, Jenny and Strax spinoff. Maybe a Paternoster show could play up the 19th century’s prejudice, with Vastra having to take utmost care to conceal her true identity? We could possibly see more Silurians, who shun Vastra as a traitor and plan to wipe out Victorian London. Likewise with Strax and other Sontarans. Perhaps this show could feature Jack the Ripper or Mr. Hyde as the big bad? Who turn out to be aliens living amongst humanity. Notably, the Paternoster gang could be part of a vast Masquerade of non-humans attempting to keep their identities secret.

An Ace Series

I’m aware that there was an aborted plan for Sophie Aldred to appear in The Sarah Jane Adventures. A spinoff that focuses on Ace would make a lot of fans really happy. What if Perivale is being gentrified by property developers? Who turn out to be the Slitheen? Dorothy McShane could dust off her baseball bat and take the fight to the bad guys. We could see other former companions return and help Ace fight off the threat to her hometown. If RTD was overseeing this it’s entirely possible that we could get some great portrayals of ordinary working-class people struggling to survive in a world hostile to them.

A Sally Sparrow Series

Carey Mulligan is probably too huge a star to reprise her role of Sally Sparrow. But we can dream, right? Maybe Sally discovers a malfunctioning vortex manipulator? Which catapults her into a universe where she never existed or was a famous celebrity. This could be a way of riffing off Mulligan’s own stardom. Ms. Sparrow could attempt to understand her newfound time travel ability. And possibly face the temptation to meddle with history for her own personal gain. It’s possible that this could cross over with the Fugitive Doctor spinoff, as Sally’s interference with the timestream draws the Doctor’s attention.

What would you like to see from Russell T Davies’ second run as showrunner? Do you agree with my spinoff suggestions? Please leave a comment and remember; things don’t always happen to me in quite the right order. Gets a bit confusing at times.

As much as I liked Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor, I think this story arc was met with such disdain that she will either be ignored or retconned.

As for Ace, I think you are over thinking it. The trailer for 26 series collection – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgHRLi02JAc – did a great job placing Ace as an adult who helps the Earth. It would be interesting to see her involved in a project that increasingly becomes more alien and dangerous until it is clear the Doctor has to return.

I’m inclined to agree with regards to Ace. She has been brought back into Doctor Who in a really clever way in the Big Finish Doctor Who stories. But in those I think it is still the younger Ace. But they basically have her as a time agent working for Gallifrey. So I think a combination of that approach and what they did in the season 26 trailer for the Doctor Who collectors set would be good.

I’m curious as to why you didn’t mention Torchwood i.e. a possible continuation of that. I know that John Barrowman has been given a bit of bad press lately. But that should not rule out doing a continuation of Torchwood with Gwen who is a pretty popular character in her own right. Also you could also do a UNIT show. Again Big Finish have had massive success with their UNIT Spin-Off adventures, which are worth a try if you haven’t already.

Re Torchwood I guess I felt like Captain Jack’s story had already been explored in that show. I was trying to choose characters that we haven’t seen much of and that haven’t really been fleshed out or developed. (I know that the 8th Doctor has had masses of adventures in audio, book and comic form just not on TV). I wasn’t aware that Ace had been brought into Big Finish Doctor Who until Ian mentioned it to be honest.

Dominic. The reason you didn’t know about Ace is most likely because you haven’t had the opportunity to listen to a lot of the Big Finish stuff. It is also because she is not really used that much in the main Doctor Who stories on Big Finish. Instead appearing for the most part in the spin-off material that Big Finish produces. She has mostly appeared in Bernice Summerfield stories alongside the 7th Doctor as well as in the Gallifrey: Time War series. I think they released volume 4 a number of months back.

In regards to Torchwood. We’ll have to agree to differ. Torchwood wasn’t necessarily just about Captain Jack’s story. There was actually a team of characters in that series. And if you remember the original Torchwood was set up by Queen Victoria in order to hunt down the Doctor. So it has a much deeper and more nuanced mythology than being about Captain Jack. The Torchwood of Captain Jack was kind of spun-off from Torchwood One. So there is shedloads more story potential in Torchwood than you think there is.

Not having a go at you. Just trying to fill in some of the gaps in your knowledge here.

I would only want a Torchwood spin-off based off of Big Finish. The main BBC show was too flawed imo. I would prefer s Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off based on RTD Covid Farewell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8sU45ax2Hs Luke and UNIT, Ace and K-9, more on the other kids, more on Jo Grant.

@Raissa. That might be interesting. But I think I’d like to see a spin-off series featuring The Meddling Monk and tracing his time meddling. A show in which the villain is lead might be fun.
