Synopsis: As the Creature Commandos attempt to save The Bride and Nina, GI Robot relives his glory days — and finally gets his wish.
The Story
Picking up the story from last week: Circe has captured The Bride and Dr. Nina Mazursky, holding them hostage at Castle Frankenstein. Rick Flag, GI Robot, Weasel, and Dr. Phosphorus launch a rescue mission. However, upon arriving at the castle, they encounter no resistance and manage to free both The Bride and Dr. Mazursky with surprising ease.
Puzzled by the lack of opposition, Rick Flag quickly realizes it was all a diversion. He orders the team to rush back to their base, which is under attack by Circe’s forces. The attackers are operating under a single grim directive: kill Princess Ilana Rostovic.
Amid the chaos of the mission, GI Robot finds himself reliving memories of his glory days—when the enemy was simpler, the mission clearer, and killing Nazis felt far less complicated.
The Voice Acting
Sean Gunn delivers a fantastic performance as the voice of GI Robot in what essentially serves as the character’s origin story, cleverly interwoven with the main storyline. The scenes where GI Robot shares moments with Dr. Mazursky (Zoë Chao), for whom he clearly has a fondness, provide a poignant contrast to the brutal, inhuman killing he carries out throughout the episode. Late in the episode, The Bride delivers a powerful line to Flag: “Well, you wanted monsters.” It’s a standout moment that perfectly encapsulates the show.
Overall
This was a really fun story, but it also carried a poignant and sad undertone. We witness GI Robot’s struggle to find his place in a society that, for the most part, has no use for him after the war. Programmed to kill Nazis, he’s left adrift when there are no more Nazis to fight. This leaves him suspicious of everyone and questioning everything, as he grapples with how much the world has changed and his inability to fully adapt. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of GI Robot’s merciless killing side and his more tender, emotional side—it makes his journey feel all the more compelling.
Overall, this was a pretty strong episode.
