Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl in the third season of the popular 1960’s Batman TV series has passed away at the age of 78.
According to reports, Craig was battling breast cancer that recently spread to her liver.
The actress played the role of Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon in 30 – episodes of the cult 1960’s television show, which starred Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin. “I used to think the reason they hired me was because they knew I could ride my own motorcycle,” Craig said in Les Daniels’ Batman: The Complete History. “I realized they hired me because I had a cartoon voice.”
In addition to her work on ‘Batman’ Craig also made memorable appearances in numerous television shows of the era, which included among them a guest role in the Original ‘Star Trek’ series in which she played an Orion Slave Girl in the classic episode ‘Whom Gods Destroy’, which saw Captain Kirk and Mr Spock get taken prisoner by former Starship Captain Garth. Craig played the role or Marta in that episode.
The actress also appeared in many other memorable series, which included ‘The Man From Uncle’, ‘The Magician’ and ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ to name just a few.
