The season 5 premiere of The Walking Dead, ‘No Sanctuary’, is quite simply the best AMC’s number one horror show can possibly be! It had it all and then some with one of the best parts of the episode being the very last scene in which a sole survivor not seen in the episode walks up to the Terminus sign, scratched out and written over by Rick to read simply, “No Sanctuary”. As the masked character turns around, we can see him to be none other than a fan favorite Morgan Jones as played by the versatile Lennie James.
Yes, Morgan’s back and just as the show’s producers have promised, this season will follow the comics a bit more and here is our first tidbit straight out of the comics, in that Morgan’s character joins Rick’s group. Now the real question is will he and Michonne hook up as they do in Robert Kirkman’s comic version of The Walking Dead?
This episode did exactly what the fans wanted and/or needed the show to do; it reunited most of Rick’s splintered group and gave the viewer one hell of an action packed episode, while also illustrating in great detail the fall of the vaunted Terminus.
The was also a lot of blood with the scene featuring the details of the Terminus slaughter house being quite graphic and borderline inappropriate for any younger viewers who might be allowed to watch The Walking Dead, but apart from that, the zombie action was an amazing dance of detailed apocalyptic blood and guts.
The highlights of the episode were clearly Carol saving the day as a one woman war machine, which is a far cry from Carol’s comic book counterpart. Likewise Denise Crosby’s character Mary confronts Carol and explains the reasons behind the dark path taken by the residents of Terminus, which is highlighted both at the beginning and end of the episode.
Seeing Rick and Carl reunited with their surviving younger Judith Grimes was also a heartfelt moment, as was seeing Rick silently thank Tyrese, who has valiantly protected the younger Grimes child for many episodes now.
All in all this is one episode that is not to be missed and if this is setting the tone for the remaining fifth season, all Walking Dead fans are in for one hell of a ride.
