There have been many movies based on Marvel Comics, with approximately three being released each year. With these movies being inspired by the largest comic book company, it’s no surprise that many have become blockbusters at the box office. Let’s take a look at the Top 5 grossing Marvel Films.

The Avengers (2012) $623 million

Since its release five years ago, the Avengers have continued to hold the top spot on this list. This film featured a wide number of super heroes depicted by many A-list celebrities including Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo. The plot of this film centers around an evil madman named Loki who is hell bent of total destruction of the earth. The Avengers of course emerge victorious from this conflict.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) $459 million

The second top grossing Marvel film is the sequel to the 2012 Avengers movie. The same actors reprise their superhero roles with the villain this time being Ultron which is played by James Spader.

Iron Man 3 (2013) $409 million

The third film in the Iron Man trilogy sees the title character battle an evil terrorist known as Mandarin. Even though the threat is close, Iron Man is able to thwart Mandarin and save the world from his subjugation.

Captain America: Civil War (2016) $408 million

This recent release was so popular it catapulted to number four on this list, dropping off one of the Spiderman installments. The sequel to two previous Captain America films, this film saw deep divisions within the Avengers causing them to pit themselves against one another.

Spider-Man (2002) $403 million

Of all the Spider-Man films, the original is still the top grossing. Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker is played by Tobey Maguire. This film sets the background for Spiderman’s story and how an encounter with a spider causes his metamorphosis.

Given the success of this film genre, they will continue to be released in theatres as well as expanding to various other entertainment sectors including gaming industry. Perhaps one of these future releases such as the new Spider-man: Homecoming or Thor: Ragnarok which are due to be released this year will be a blockbuster and dethrone one of this list’s current titles.

Are these numbers for the international box office outside of the U.S. or just the U.S. box office?
