Just recently, the producers of Star Trek: Discovery Tweeted a kind of official welcome to the show’s main character and star, Sonequa Martin-Green, as they have finally released the name and rank to the former Walking Dead actress’ new role, which is First Officer Michael Burnham, who is the second in command of the USS Discovery.
Interestingly, CBS and Discovery’s have also just recently added another actor to the show’s lineup who will be bringing back a supporting character from the original Star Trek series, Harry Mudd, who will be played by Rainn Wilson. Although it is not clear whether or not Mudd will be a guest star or an ongoing character, who will more likely than not also prove to be a royal pain in Discovery’s deflector dish.
As was recently referred to in BLASTR and as was originally reported in The Hollywood Reporter, Sonequa Martin-Green had this to say about her upcoming Star Trek role, “Being the first officer on the ship is going to be a wild ride because we haven’t seen that happen before in the Star Trek cannon, we haven’t seen the story be told from the perspective of the first officer rather than the captain. It’s going to open up so much potential for new storylines because not being the captain automatically gives you a different perspective. It’s going to be a wild ride and everybody on board — in front of the camera and behind — I’ve been floored by the performances on The Walking Dead from the beginning and I’m going to be astounded again by the people we’ve got assembled on Star Trek. I’m really excited.”
Star Trek: Discovery is scheduled to premier hopefully in the late summer of 2017 on CBS, before airing regularly on CBS All Access. The show was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, is produced in part by Eugene Roddenberry and also stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Chieffo, Shazad Latif, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy and Sam Vartholomeos.
