Nicholas Brendon, the American TV and film actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has sadly died. Brendon passed away from natural causes in his sleep on March 20, 2026, in Indiana. Born on April 12, 1971 in Los Angeles. Brendon originally hoped to play baseball, but lost his passion for it at age 20. Brendon took up acting as a way to cope with a stutter. Notably, he later worked with The Stuttering Foundation of America. He served as honorary chairperson for National Stuttering Awareness Week in May 2001.
Brendon was cast as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer after working several jobs. Brendon’s role was something of an everyman character. As a matter of fact Xander was based on creator Joss Whedon’s own high school experiences. Equally important, Brendon received Saturn Award nominations in 1998, 1999 and 2000 for his Xander role.
Brendon’s filmography includes Big Gay Love, Coherence and Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel in which Brendon appeared as himself. Additionally, Brendon was also part of the writing team for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10. Contributing several Xander-centric stories. Further, Brendon released the webcomic Very Bad Koalas in 2010. Moreover, he sold his own original artwork. Brendon married actor Tressa DiFiglia in 2001. The couple separated in 2006.
Police arrested Brendon in 2010 for felony vandalism and in 2014, for which he gave a public apology. Brendon was arrested in 2015, 2017 and 2021. He struggled with his mental health and made several suicide attempts.
Brendon struggled with cauda equina syndrome and underwent surgery in 2021. In 2021 Brendon experienced a series of health problems.
Brendon’s Xander portrayal was special. When Xander kissed Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and had sex with Faith (Eliza Dushku). It was like we were doing that. Not to mention Xander’s moment with Cordelia at the end of The Zeppo. In like manner, Xander simply smiles at Queen C’s attempts to demean him. To say nothing of his heroism throughout that episode; which saved the other characters’ lives.
Buffy actor Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote on Facebook: “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight , and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me.” Gellar finished by saying: “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
RIP Mr. Brendon. You were so much more than just the Zeppo.
