If anyone deserves an ode it’s Winston Smith! Even for those who’ve not read it, George Orwell’s 1984 conjures terror and horror. As a book, it’s a massive contribution to culture, perhaps one of the most important novels ever. The story’s main protagonist, Winston Smith, gets his place amongst the growing catalogue of works at May The Verse Be With You. Just don’t tell the Thought Police . . .

An ode seems about right to try and capture the awful life and fate of Winston Smith. Poor chap! His life at least lives on in legend, now. Orwell’s book is the source of many a meme.
