A “monster” of a book! So many stories owe so much to Frankenstein (1818). Furthermore, many films do, too. The novel, penned by Mary Shelley, is an absolute classic, thoroughly deserving of a tribute from May The Verse Be With You. Many consider the novel to the first real science fiction novel. Certainly, it’s still going strong after two hundred years and is indeed one of the true genre classics.

A Monster Made

The creature asked,

‘Why was I made,

this life is cold

and I’m afraid,

Why bring me to

a world unkind,

and birth me from

your broken mind?’

Victor, aghast

with what he’d done

knew he’d pulled flames

out of the sun . . .

and so, the heat

of his own ways

meant very soon

that hell would blaze

The battle played

out so cruelly,

the war cost his

humanity . . .

Last year, SciFiPulse watched and reviewed a stage-show of Frankenstein, screened by the national theatre. You can read what we had to say on the performance. The story still continues to influence today, which shows just how wonderful it is. There are many versions, including films and even other books that use the characters and ideas. A truly wonderful story! Stay safe dear readers
