Margot Robbie is reportedly joining the cast of DC’s David Ayer-directed ‘Suicide Squad’ movie as Harley Quinn.
Collider reports that the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ actress has agreed to take on the role of Harley Quinn, who is a henchman of the Joker.
Harley Quinn was first introduced to the ‘Batman’ universe during the animated series in which she shared a disturbing history with the Joker. Originally named Harleen Quinzel, she was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who attempted to analyse the Joker. However, he soon manipulated her into becoming infatuated with him and she became his sidekick.
Although a popular character in the comic books. Harley Quinn has never been portrayed in a live action movie, but she was briefly featured as an unseen member of the Suicide Squad that featured in season 2 of ‘Arrow’.
Robbie, who rose to fame in ‘Neighbours’ in her role as Donna, has a number of high-profile projects lined up, including ‘Tarzan’, ‘Focus’ and ‘Z for Zachariah’.
Cara Delevingne has also been rumoured for the part of Quinn.
Jared Leto is said to be a strong contender for the role of the Joker, while Will Smith, Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy have also been linked to the film.
‘Suicide Squad,’ which was described by Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara as “a gritty story of a team of supervillains who take on black ops missions for the US government”, will be released in 2016.
