In Review: Supergirl – In Plain Sight

The conflict between Malefic and J’onn J’onzz reaches a boiling point.

Synopsis: Kara’s investigation into William Dey’s “criminal” activities results in the shocking revelation he is not who she thinks. Meanwhile, the conflict between Malefic and J’onn J’onzz reaches a boiling point.

Review: A little better this week as we see some progression of the J’onn J’onzz storyline, but still a little too much attention on the Brainy and Nia stuff.

The Story

J’onn J’onzz, Supergirl, Brainy, and the team go up against Malefic in an attempt to return him to the Phantom Zone, but something goes wrong with the technology, which means a lovesick Brainy has to figure out the problem. Lena Luther is called in to aid Brainy with fixing the technology and sees an opportunity to capture Malefic with the tech for her own ends.

While Brainy and Lena are busy fixing the technology. Malefic take control of Alex and turns her against his brother.

Jimmy and his sister return to their hometown to find that it has become a crime-ridden corrupt town with a prison that is consistently full of criminals that have been given long sentences for what amounts to petty crime. Jimmy befriends a teenager whose mother is in jail and decides to stay behind and help expose the corruption in the town and be the beacon of light that it needs.

The Acting

Once again. This episode proves to be a showcase for David Harewood as he has a few really emotional scenes as J’onn J’onzz has to face up to the guilt of having erased the memory of his brother from both himself and their father. The scene where a possessed Alex confronts him about it knocks it out of the park.

Overall

This episode was somewhat stronger than last weeks as we got a little more of the Martian storyline, but it was still encumbered with story threads from other plot points such as the mystery surrounding the new reporter William Dey, which does get a little development, but it felt kind of forced into the story.

Overall. It was an okay episode, which didn’t really offer up any surprises. I also think Lena Luther breaking bad is a little to easy for the writers and if anything sort of cheapens what has been done with the character in previous seasons.
