Synopsis: Adam Strange was right! In this issue guest-starring Batman, the Pykkts have come to Earth, and they plan to claim the planet as their own. Earth’s greatest heroes have faced alien invasions before, but they’re about to learn that the Pykkts are more formidable, more determined, and more deadly than any invading force they’ve faced before. Only Adam Strange has ever defeated them, but it nearly cost him everything-including his own sanity!

The Story

Picking the story up from the last issue. The Pykkts have arrived and Adam Strange has already begun work on culling them. Batman and the other superheroes are doing their best to defend Earth, but they will not do what is neccessary. They also do not agree with Adam Strange’s ruthless methods. After all, they are mere superheroes. Adam is something else entirely.

In the flashback sequence. We see Adam being psychologically tortured by a Pykkt collaborator. These flashbacks work well as a means of showing us why Strange is as hardcore as he is.

The Artwork

The art team really excels in this issue. I loved the opening sequence in which we see Adam do away with a Pykkt scout. This leads directly into a panel where we see Adam kill a Pykkt that Batman had tried to capture.

The panels in which we see Adam get tortured are really psychedelic in parts and somewhat trippy.

Overall

This is a really solid issue. We get further exploration into Adam Strange’s past, which provides some explanation as to why he is so ruthless when it comes to the Pykkts. I loved the brief exchange he has with Batman when he says, “You’re a superhero. I’m something else.” That brief exchange says it all and it is nicely juxtaposed with the scenes of Adam being tortured.

Overall. This is a brilliant setup for the next issue, which promises to have tons of action.
