Synopsis: With the ISA on their trail, Courtney, Pat, and the team regroup to figure out their next steps. Meanwhile, Rick makes a breakthrough, and the team prepares for a showdown with the ISA.
Having learned the identity of Stargirl. Icycle orders Sportsmaster and Tigress to kill Courtney Whitmore and her family. They attack while Pat and the family are packing up to go to a safe house where they can plan out how to stop the ISA. Meanwhile, Brainwave is working with Dragon King and The Gambler to reprogram 100 million adult American brains by amplifying Brainwave’s powers.
This episode very much belongs to the villains as they become the most compelling component of the story. I particularly enjoyed Christopher James Baker’s take on Brainwave and the pleasure he seemed to take in revealing Stargirl’s identity to Icycle. But the most fun scene was when Brainwave has a brief exchange with Cindy Burman, who Dragon King still has locked up in a cell.
In regards to the good guys. I really enjoyed the scenes between Pat and his son. Luke Wilson and Trae Romano do a brilliant job of selling us a convincing father-son dynamic. The scene where young Mike loses his temper with Pat for treating him like a child was very convincing. I also liked the brief scene that Mike has with Courtney later on in the episode where he is beginning to come to terms with the fact that Courtney is Stargirl and asks to try the staff out.
This episode does a great job of setting things up for next week’s season one finale and leaves us with a wonderful cliffhanger in which all the JSA with the exception of its adult members are suddenly on their own.
We get some great action sequences and some really nice dramatic moments. I particularly enjoyed the fight between Pat and The Sportsmaster at the start of the episode and Mike’s role in helping his father defeat the Sportsmaster. The effects used for the sequence where we see Brainwave get his upgrade from Dragon King was also fun to watch.
Overall. A great set up episode for next week’s finale.
