IN REVIEW: STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN (S3 – EP4) CHAPTER 20 – The Foundling

Din Djarin returns to the hidden Mandalorian covert.
Foundling

Synopsis: In The Foundling. Din Djarin returns to the hidden Mandalorian covert. Grogu begins his training to become a Mandalorian Warrior.

The Story

Having returned to the Mandalorian Covert in last week’s episode. Din Djarin and Bo-Katan have been redeemed and welcomed back into the group. Keen to get Grogu up and running with his training. Din Djarin has Grogu take on another Foundling in a training duel with darts. Grogu of course wins, but when the other boy is taken by a pterosaur. Bo-Katan leads a war party to rescue the boy who is the son of a Mandalorian called Paz. Fearing that their Jet Packs and ships will alert the Pterosaur to their presence. Bo-Katan and the group, which includes Paz choose to climb the mountain to get to the pterosaur’s nest.

Meanwhile, back at the Camp The Armorour makes a new piece of armor for Grogu. While she is working on the new piece of armor. Grogu has flashbacks to his rescue from The Jedi Temple on Coruscant. He was escorted by the Jedi Master Kelleran Beq and members of the Naboo Armed Forces.

Acting

Pedro Pascal and Katee Sackhoff work really well together in this episode as Din Djarin and Bo-Katan lead a war party to rescue Paz’s son Ragnar from the pterosaur. But it is the gentler moment earlier in the episode where Din Djarin gently encourages Grogu to show the Covert what he can do that shines. As it gives us a positive view of masculinity. Sackhoff is strong throughout the episode and has some solid scenes. A fun moment is when she asks Din Djarin how she should go about taking her helmet off to eat. But her best scene comes towards the end of the episode when she tells the Armourer about her encounter with the Mythosaur.

Overall

While the storyline for this episode was relatively simple. It does quite a lot of work in showing us the Mandalorian Culture and how their creed helps them find mutual cooperation with each other. I also liked that we got to see Grogu have some flashbacks to his time at The Jedi Temple and it will be interesting to see where all that leads in terms of the choices that he will have to make.
