Devil's Deal

Synopsis: In ‘Devil’s Deal’. As the seeds of rebellion foment on an outer rim world, the Empire schemes to squash it. But in so doing it incites the rebellious spirit of Hera Syndulla.

The Story

This week’s episode takes place on the planet Ryloth and sees the senator of that world sign an agreement with the Empire. One of the conditions of this deal is that all the Twi’leks hand over their weapons to the Empire. These terms are unacceptable to the leadership of the world. But Cham Syndulla reluctantly agrees. However, not all the Syndulla family are on the same page. A future leader of the rebellion in the form of a young Hera Syndulla gets roped into a mission with her uncle to stock up on black market weapons. The idea is to make ready for a future rebellion. However as with all plans. Things go horribly wrong and Hera is implicated, which forces her parents to make a stand.

Voice Acting

Vanessa Marshall makes a welcome return as a very young tweenage version of Hera Syndulla who became a much-loved character on Star Wars: Rebels. We get a really nice scene with Hera (Michelle Ang) and Omega as they tour the Bad Batch’s ship. The scene where Hera talks about flying to Hera is very in character for Hera who sees flying as an extension of who she is.

Dee Bradley Baker gets a bit of a break this episode as he only really has a handful of scenes. A bulk of his workload this week involves the clone troopers and of course Crosshair. Noshir Dalal puts in a solid performance as Vice Admiral Rampart who is coordinating the take over of Ryloths military and security.

‘Devil’s Deal’ is a fantastic episode, which gives us some backstory for Hera Syndulla while simultaneously showing us an early example of rebellion against the Empire. I particularly enjoyed the little scene between Hera and Omega that we saw midway through the episode.
