Synopsis: Set during the final days of The High Republic. Star Wars: The Acolyte tells a murder mystery story in which a former Jedi is reunited with her former Master to investigate a string of murders.

The Story

A young woman kills Jedi MasterIndara called Mae who has been believed to be dead. Her twin sister Osha who was rescued by The Jedi and left the Jedi order is immediately suspected. However, no sooner as Osha is captured she winds up involved in a prison break, which is when she has a force-vision and learns that her sister is still alive and is murdering Jedi.

Learning of Osha’s escape. Her form Jedi trainer Master Sol sets out with his new Padwan to find her. As the investigation develops Osha is cleared of the murder as Sol, his padwan and Osha begin to track down Mae.

The Acting

The acting performances throughout these opening two episodes are okay as in just okay. No one jumps out to me as outstanding nor have any of the characters gotten me over-invested yet. Amandla Stenberg is fairly good at doing the duel roles of Mae and Osha, but no one in the supporting roles has leaped out at me yet.

Overall

The Acolyte gets off to somewhat of a mixed start for me. The setup isn’t too far removed from what you’d see in your average procedural drama. The visuals are great and the fight choreography is fun as we see the various Jedi powers such as Force-Push and whatnot. And we get some cool Lightsaber fights, but as far as the story goes it doesn’t really offer anything new. At least not just yet.

Overall. I suspect this is one of those shows that will take a while to get going as the mythology is given time to unravel. At present, we know that Mae isn’t working alone. She has a teacher and the fun will be in finding out who that teacher is and learning what their story is.
