Synopsis: This month on Star Trek: Year Five. The Enterprise receives a distress call from Alpha Centauri and arrives to find a planet in the midst of a deadly global pandemic. But is nature responsible for this new virus, or is there something more sinister at play?
The Story
As they get closer to Earth. Captain Kirk and his crew receive a distress call from Alpha Centauri where a mysterious virus has broken out. As they decipher the message, which is very faint. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy set about beaming down to the planet to try and lend aid. However, providing that aid could well be difficult given that Spock and McCoy are at odds. This is making Kirk’s efforts to separate them that bit more difficult.
Meanwhile, on board the Enterprise. Checkov, who is training to be a security officer things he knows who or what is behind the virus.
Artwork
Once again. Artist Angel Hernandez does a brilliant job of capturing the likenesses of all of the favorite Star Trek characters. In particular, his close up drawing of Lt. Uhura is visually stunning and captures the younger Nichelle Nichols brilliantly. I also thought the artist did a wonderful job of giving us a decent visual of the carnage that the pandemic had created on the planet.
Overall
Jim McCann does the writing duties on this issue and does a great job of setting up what will be a solid and relevant story. The use of a pandemic as the main problem that Kirk has to deal with is a timely tale to tell. Especially given current world events. Although, the origins of this particular pandemic are what is going to make this story interesting as things move forward.
Overall. This is a solid start to what could potentially be a really good chapter in these final missions of Kirk’s original five-year journey.
