Synopsis: In All In, Captain Burnham tracks Book to an old haunt from their courier days and gets drawn into a high-stakes competition for a powerful weapon.
Picking up from where the last episode left off. Captain Burnham is sent on a covert mission to track down Cleveland Booker and Ruon Tarka who stole a new prototype spore drive and plan to use it to bring down the DMA. However, in order to create the weapon to do the job. Tarka needs isolineum which is very rare and only available in four places. Thankfully Book knows of at least one of them, but it will lead them to one of his old hangouts from his courier days.
Acting on a hunch. Captain Michael Burnham enlists the help of Lt. Joann Owosekun to help her find Booker and hopefully talk him out of making a huge mistake. However, when Booker refuses to stand down. Burnham and Owosekun become engaged in a number of high-stakes gamers in order to make enough latinum to buy the isolineum from under Booker and Tarka. However, this move only draws Burnham and Booker into a final poker game with the prize being the isolineum. And of course Burnham and Booker both have to go all in. As neither one of them is going to back down.
Sonequa Martin-Green gets to enjoy herself a little in this episode as we see a less Starfleet version of Burnham risking all to try and save Booker from himself. The scenes she has at the poker table where she is trying to provoke her opponents were quite fun to watch. The tension between Burnham and Booker (David Ajala) is teased out to the max here. Added to the pot is a strong performance from Shawn Doyle as Tarka who has done a fantastic job of manipulating Booker into joining him on his mission to destroy the DMA.
Also, special mention should go to Oyin Oladejo who finally gets a moment to shine as Lt. Joann Owosekun who is one of the characters that the writers of this series have been neglecting for the past 4 years. Thankfully, we get to learn quite a lot about Owosekun in this episode and find out that she is a pretty fierce fighter as well as rather street smart. Hopefully, the writers give Oladego a bit more to do in future episodes because I quite enjoyed what we saw here.
Star Trek: Discovery looks like it is all in for a pretty solid second half of the season. As this was a fairly strong start.
