Synopsis: When it rains… it pours. And then rains some more. Then snows. Nancy and the Hardy brothers get closer to discovering Nancy’s killer, but in order to do so they need to dive into the depths of small-town River Heights – literally and figuratively. The penultimate issue in this noir series perfect for fans of Riverdale, Nancy Drew and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
While in the process of finding her Killer. Nancy Drew with some help from the Hardy Boys uncovers a clever drug trafficking scheme, which involves the local pharmacist. Additionally, we learn that Nancy’s father Carson Drew could well be involved somehow. In order to learn more Nancy, Joe and Frank go on a stakeout and find out that Flo and Freddie Bobbsey are involved and that they know the identity of the person that tried to have Nancy Drew killed.
Joe Eisma continues to get the balance right with his art for this comic book series. I loved the choices of angles and shading that Eisma employs in order to create the perfect noir feeling. He manages to create a great contrast between light and shadow, but its the panels toward the close of the issue that really amp up the mood as we get lots of heavy rain.
Writer Anthony Del Col does a great job of slowly unfolding the mystery in this chapter. I particularly enjoyed the conflict between Frank and Nancy’s ex-boyfriend Ned Nickerson, who she needs help from in order to make their planned stakeout less problematic where local authorities are concerned. We also have a little conflict between Frank and Nancy after they see Ned.
Overall. A really solid issue, which puts things in place for next month’s finale, which I’m sure will prove to be a very satisfying end to what has been a pretty cool mystery.
